1 Photo per Day Round 12

Still catching up. It’s gonna take a while. But all good things (and photo per day posts) are worth waiting for!

February 28th 2011 (Not a leap year, dang it)

Day 78

1 photo per day 78 fire drills are more fun on fire teams

This was our first fire drill in port. It ended up being more of a general muster than anything; making sure we knew how to get everyone to where they needed to go. In other words it was a bit longer than usual and there was less to do. Fire drills are usually a lot of fun though, especially since I’m on a fire team and not just standing around waiting for it to end… except for when we end up standing around for it waiting to end. Like in this photo. Yawn.

Day 79

1 photo per day 79 Frances is here

FRANCES IS HERE! I got to pick her up from the dock on our little airport run and hang out a bit. Frances was on my Gateway and is third-to-last to make it to Sierra Leone. Karin just made it, and Brenda is bringing up a distant rear. It’s so good to have Frances here though; my life was lacking in laughter for far too long.

Hurry it up Brenda. And bring fruit snacks.

Day 80

1 photo per day 80 setting up DSTV

You wouldn’t believe how much some people want their TVs to work around here. At least I have a hard time believing it since I don’t watch TV. I guess that makes me the weird one. Point is, we got together on a sunny Saturday morning and with our DSTV rep we got the satellite TV working. Now you can watch all of the football (soccer) and BBC news your heart desires. But as always, and this would make Duke happy if he read it, FOX News remains a constant among the options (forcibly).

Day 81

1 photo per day 81 T-rex attack

The T-Rex is a mighty beast, and a mighty beast is he. These things are beyond dangerous, but they’re also super cool. They just grab containers and toss them around like they’re tissue boxes. Really heavy tissue boxes that would crush you in a heartbeat, but tissue boxes nonetheless. POINT IS they’re cool, and they’re called TEREX which only makes me want one that much more. This one is pictured clearing space on the dock so we can put up our tents and park our vehicles. GO TEREX GO!

Day 82

1 photo per day 82 traffic in freetown sierra leone

The first screening day happened at the stadium. And while it was far more eventful than this shot we weren’t allowed to take any photos of the screening. I’ll see if I can dig any up to share at some point. This photo was taken from the back of a flatbed land rover. We hopped in and took off at the end of the day and wound up sitting/standing in it (think pickup) for the next 2 hours. The photo helps illustrate why. It was a good bonding experience; even though Brian almost strangled me twice.

Day 83

1 photo per day 83 danger palets

Briggs, my roommate, likes to operate the crane. Here you can see him doing just that, lowering a massive pallet to the dock for me to use with the satellite dish. And when I say massive, I mean they’re dang heavy. I had to carry one from the hold (deck 3 all-the-way-aft) to the dock (gangway being deck 5 nearly-all-the-way-forward) and almost died multiple times. My wrist hasn’t been the same since… or my shoulder for that matter. Anyways, cranes are a wonderful solution to pallet woes.

Day 84

1 photo per day 84 nurse patients

The hospital open house was coming, and so the nurses all dressed up like patients to advertise. It turned out to be a blast. They set up all kinds of stations where you could go experience hospital life. Whether it was lancing pockets of puss or leading the blind, they had everything. Even being a nurse for a shift, which basically involved abusing a hostile patient (nurse) as much as you could in 10 minutes.

RUNNERS UP (yay)

As always, mouse over them for a moment to get the captions (because that’s all you get)
